[Create Space] Finalist - International Book Awards
|
Dear Friends who want to create space for peace --
Thank you for your support this past year in purchasing Create Space for Peace: Gene Stoltzfus, 40 Years of Peacemaking or holding book events (Chicago, Indiana, Fort Frances, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Colorado) or getting a review into your local papers.
GOOD NEWS! Create Space was a finalist in the 2011 International Book Awards in the Spirituality: Inspirational category http://bit.ly/k1hDEl. The second printing, scheduled this month, will feature the gold embossed "Finalist" seal on the cover. See http://createspaceforpeace.info/pages/about-the-book.
Additionally, in his book review published this month, John A. Lapp, Executive Secretary Emeritus of Mennonite Central Committee and former Goshen College Dean and Provost wrote:
"Gene Stoltzfus was a major shaper of Christian peace witness during the past half century. This volume is a superb collection of 50 reflections stretching over 40 years ... His activism was always purposeful: âto make coherent the connections between poverty and violence, creating a pathway so people can understand the connections and do something about them.â ... What kept Stoltzfusâ peacemaking work fresh and relevant over the decades was his deep devotion, attention to worship, valuing and nurturing friendship and kindness, careful listening, cooperative work and, above all, living with hope ... Stoltzfus had a knack for asking clarifying questions. He freely asked âWhat are your dreams?â or âHave you found your voice?â His work was intended to inspire âpositive and uplifting responses from the heart.â Virtually every page of this inspiring book does exactly that ... Disciples of the way of peace will find in these pages fresh imagination and a courageous model."

Do think about sharing Create Space as a host/hostess gift as you visit friends and family this summer. While the seriousness of the issues involved in peacemaking might not strike you as light summer reading material, it's intelligent reading in small increments with plenty of pictures and a joyful spirit.
Have a good summer ahead.
Blessings and Peace, Dorothy

[Create Space] Have you Heard? Positive Feedback to Create SpaceBook Tour
|
"You know, Create Space for Peace is easy to read, I understand it. I couldn't put it down, I finished it in three sittings."
"There is a lot of humor in the book, especially in details of how Gene dealt with some of the wrongs he was trying to right. There are pictures in the book that show Gene in various places in the world protesting against injustice and even the signs he held in the pictures were not confrontational such as one that stated â Scones, not Drones."
"In addition to his field experience, folks are pleasantly surprised to learn that Gene was intellectually curious and dedicated to have earned both an M.A. in Asian/Southeast Asian Studies and an M.Div." Dear friends,
These were some of the comments I heard while on book tour promoting Create Space. On numerous occasions, there were also remarks about how easily accessible the book is and how Gene's unassuming, inspirational voice is captured in his writings.
If you have not yet bought a copy for yourself or for friends, I encourage you to do so at http://createspaceforpeace.info/pages/about-the-book. For those of you who prefer a sampling before purchase, a review of Create Space is available at http://createspaceforpeace.info/review-of-create-space. And media coverage of the book tour can be found here: http://createspaceforpeace.info/51100420.
Lastly, as part of the 2009 CPT UK Speaking Tour, Gene spoke in Belfast, Ireland, about the basics of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), CPT Iraq Team's role in uncovering the Abu Gharib scandal and Gene's learnings from 40 years of peacemaking. This 9-part video series is a comprehensive look at how direct, nonviolent actions and social justice are undertaken by CPT -- a real-life case study of peacemaking in action.
This video series is posted here: http://createspaceforpeace.info/pages/resource.
As always, I am interested to hear your reflections and sharings. Feel free to write to me.

[Create Space] Have you heard... Rave Reviews for Create Space
|
Hi all,
More Sharings --
"While doing 2 days of care giving work for an elderly lady in Woodstock, Illinois, I almost finished reading the book. The wisdom of the 40 years of organizing for peace is very helpful to me who remains virtually struggling for it in two nations, societies and culture (US and Philippines). According to Gene, the world is my home so I must be in my element even if I'm here continuing the work in the "belly of the beast". Thank you for coming up with this book." -Myrla Baldonado, Bayanihan Foundation.
"We're planning a book announcement during the worship service and then taking orders for the book. Duncan Smith and I will lead an adult Sunday school class based on Gene's writings in the Fall. The promo video is very powerful. I intend to include it in a presentation during a future worship service." -Allan Classen, editor North West Examiner, Portland, OR.
"Just to let you know I picked up a copy of Create Space for Peace at the CMU bookstore today. I had a chance to browse through it for an hour while I waited for a friend to show up for dinner. I'm very impressed with the book. Thanks for your excellent work in putting this important collection together." -Larry Kehler, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Hope to see you at a book event.
Best regards, Dorothy Friesen

[Create Space] Reminder: Books Have Arrived...
|
Whenever we act and speak from our hearts we contribute to the larger healing of our world. Gene seemed to know that from the get-go. One clear way to respond to Geneâs life is to continue to engage the world from our deep core.
Here are some comments from those engaged in the world who have already ordered Create Space:
"We ordered 15 books - they're almost all gone. Loreto Sister, Pat McCormick, says she is using the book for her morning meditation." -Al Zook, peace activist/massage therapist, Denver CO.
"I like the pictures, the short articles and that I can dip into the book anywhere." -Kaaren Danneneman, Kiiishik Community Association, Trout Lake, ON. (Kaaren got Gene started on making earrings from moose-bone. The proceeds from the sale of Gene's tools went to Kiishik which trains Anishinabe youth in traditional values and skills. Kaaren says, "The money will be used to make permanent markers on graves in traditional burial sites. As the old people are going, this is one way of keeping part of their knowledge alive.")
"I just returned from Hebron. Lots of people there saying how much they missed seeing Gene. I received the books I ordered and of course stayed up most of the night reading one. Great stuff. I plan on giving most of this first group to young people at some youth peace retreats I am leading." -Rick Polhamus, reservist, Christian Peacemaker Teams, OH.
"I just ordered a copy of the book, and we all look forward to reading it. Gene visited us here in West Virginia in December 2009 for about a week, a visit we will always treasure. He offered invaluable advice, was a true servant in helping out with chores that were not asked of him but he did because he saw the need. I remember well our many conversations. And the people in the beleaguered coalfields (challenging mountain top removal strategy of mining) really took to him." -Allen Johnson, Christians for the Mountains, West Virginia.
"Our Quaker Meeting here in New Brunswick is working with St. Thomas University in Fredericton to establish the John McKendy Peace Centre. (John McKendy was a beloved professor at St. Thomas and long time peace activist). I will make sure Geneâs book is included in our contribution to the Centreâs library." -Keith Helmuth, Woodstock, New Brunswick.

[Create Space] The Book has Arrived!
|
Hi all,
Create Space for Peace is fresh from the printing press.
People who pre-ordered copies have them by now and are purchasing more to give to friends and relatives, to place in their church or public library, to read in their book club.
Here are a few sample comments from readers --
From Louis Wolf, Washington, D.C.: Thank you soooo much! One copy is destined for my friend James P. Anderson who has been on Death Row at San Quentin Prison in California since 1979 - and who really is innocent. The photos are so great and bespeak the deep commitment of Gene to humanity.
From Susan Haitsma, Austin, TX: I received a copy of the book earlier than expected, have begun reading it, and I think itâs great. It is so well done -- really gives the feeling of being in Geneâs presence. I appreciate reading Geneâs words as he wrote them, and the tributes from his colleagues, too.
Best regards, Dorothy Friesen
